(Yicai Global) July 30 -- Qualcomm, the world's biggest supplier of mobile phone chips, is teaming up with China's largest gaming company Tencent Holdings to cooperate in the digital entertainment field.

The partnership may include optimizing the performance of Tencent-developed video games on Android devices using Qualcomm chips, further advancing cloud-based, augmented and virtual reality games, developing a fifth-generation gaming phone, and other technologies, the US chipmaker said in a statement posted on its website yesterday.

"We hope that fostering cooperation between both parties can utilize our respective technologies and research and development expertise to further innovate the game industry, thereby bringing better game quality and interactive experience to users," said Tencent Senior Vice President Steven Ma.

A nonbinding memorandum of understanding was signed between Beijing-based unit Qualcomm Wireless Communications Technologies China and Shenzhen-based Tencent Games, according to the statement.

"We look forward to this new cooperation with Tencent Games to enrich lives and transform gaming behaviors on a global scale," Qualcomm China Chairman Frank Meng said in the same press release.
