(Yicai Global) June 23 -- Powerful tornado has battered a China's town Funing in Yancheng, Jiangsu province on Thursday afternoon, killing 51 people and causing many houses to topple. Transportation and electricity have been cut off.
The extreme weather causes downpours, hailstorms and a tornado which battered parts of Yancheng city at 2:30 pm.
Gales of 125 km per hour battered several outer townships of Funing County, while in Sheyang, the winds reached 100 km per hour. Many houses collapsed in the gales, with 51 deaths reported and dozens of injuries as of 8:30 pm. The affected areas are densely populated, and the death toll is expected to rise.
Pictures posted by media online showed injured people lying amid overturned houses and cars, split tree trunks and broken power lines.
It said the extreme weather was reported in several townships of Funing and Sheyang counties in the suburbs of Yancheng.
Severe floods in southern China killed at least 22 people and left 20 missing earlier this week.
