(Yicai Global) Dec. 5 -- Finnish startup HMD Global Oy will release a new full-screen smartphone next month to celebrate the first anniversary of the Nokia brand's return, online media outlet TechWeb reported.

Insiders speculate the new phone will be a Nokia 8 handset upgraded with an 18:9 display to meet demand in China. They also suspect the screen will be an OLED display built by Samsung Electronics Co. [KRX:005930], which is likely to feature a dual-curved design and cost upwards of CNY4,000 (USD604.8).

The dual-curved design does not increase a phone's practicality, but has been an aesthetic hit among consumers. The full-screen display will be the key feature, especially in China where on-the-go streaming and mobile gaming are popular.

In terms of hardware, the phone will feature a 5.5-inch screen with up to 2K resolution, and will house a Snapdragon 835 processor, which the Samsung Galaxy S8 also uses. The handset will come with six gigabytes of ram and the option of 64 or 128 gigabytes of storage, while not featuring a standard 3.5-milimeter headphone jack.

Nokia Oyj [NYSE:NOK; HEL:NOKIA] is a Finland-based communications multinational. Famed for its early handsets, it struggled to compete in the evolving smartphone industry and sold its mobile division to Microsoft Corp. [NASDAQ:MSFT] unit Microsoft Mobile in April 2014. HMD Global bought the rights to use the Nokia brand last December.
