Penalties Have Been Imposed on 155 Web Original Programs in First Half, China's Media Regulator Says Penalties Have Been Imposed on 155 Web Original Programs in First Half, China's Media Regulator Says

(Yicai Global) Sept. 6 -- The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) -- China's media regulator -- has imposed penalties on 155 items of original audiovisual content broadcast on the internet in the first half, state-run Xinhua news agency reported, citing a senior official at the administration as saying.

One hundred and twenty-five were removed, and the remaining 30 were temporarily removed for re-editing.

Penalties were imposed on these web series and programs because "They contain vulgar content and violated the regulations," said Luo Jianhui, director at the online video department of SAPPRFT, at an industry form yesterday.

The administration also tightened management over Internet Protocol Television businesses, requiring them to act in compliance with relevant regulations, Luo added. Those failing to do so will be ordered to implement effective remedies within a specified time limit.

In the first half, websites filed about 400 web television series, over 4,000 web movies, 568 web cartoons, 84 web documentaries and almost 4,600 web TV programs with the SAPPRFT, and the filing numbers continued to increase, he noted.

The administration is the major national media and culture industry regulator. Online audiovisual content publishers must stick to the bottom line of 'civility and wholesomeness,' and the same censorship criteria are also applicable to web content, it said in a recent document.
