PBOC Opens WeChat Account; Governor Pledges Greater Transparency, Credibility PBOC Opens WeChat Account; Governor Pledges Greater Transparency, Credibility

(Yicai Global) Aug. 2 -- The People's Bank of China opened an account today on tech titan Tencent Holdings WeChat messaging app -- which has the most users of any in China -- to make the central bank more accessible to the public and its policies more transparent.

The first news posted to the account was a brief speech by PBOC Governor Yi Gang. The move will "make it easier for people to understand the work of the PBOC and complain about or give advice on our work," Yi said.

The central bank will continue to enrich and improve the avenues for its contacts with the public and enhance the transparency and credibility of its policies, he added.

PBOC earlier opened an account on China's Twitter-like Weibo social media platform to get closer to the public and now has 3.2 million followers.

WeChat is China's most active social media, however, with more than one billion active users. China's other important agencies, including the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, have all previously set up public accounts on WeChat to transmit official information to the public.
