(Yicai) June 13 -- Meitu is in an artificial intelligence dividend period, with 83 percent of the Chinese photo-editing app operator's main products having AI functions, according to its chief executive officer.

In the short term, it is challenging to catch up with the technical capabilities and generation effect of OpenAI's text-to-video AI generator Sora, Wu Xinhong, who is also Meitu's founder and chairman, said at the Meitu Multimedia Festival held yesterday. The firm's major business is not to sell models but to monetize applications, he noted.

Apps have 10 times the market space of models, Wu noted. Compared with the general business of selling application programming interfaces, apps have a clearer business model, he said, adding that once there is a good user base, they can profit with VIP subscription and other methods.

Meitu had 10.63 million VIP members as of June 11, up about 48 percent from a year earlier, it noted.

Xiamen-based Meitu released six products during the Meitu Multimedia Festival, including MOKI, an AI short video generator based on a large language model.

Meitu will continue to invest in LLMs but maintain self-restraint, Wu pointed out.
