(Yicai) Nov. 28 -- Construction work on smartphone giant Oppo's new research and development headquarters in the Chinese city of Hangzhou has been paused, according to the local authorities.

The project has been temporarily halted due to adjustments in the plan, the management committee of the Future Science and Technology City in Yuhang district announced on Nov. 26. No further details were provided.

Located in the Future Sci-Tech City, the Oppo Global Mobile Terminal R&D Headquarters is a cornerstone of the Dongguan-based firm’s innovation strategy, aiming to bolster its role in mobile device research and development.

Changes in market dynamics, technological trends, as well as company and government priorities may necessitate changes in project plans.

The HQ includes a 37-story office building and a six-floor commercial complex. Construction began in September 2021, and is scheduled for completion in 2027. The phone maker paid CNY1.18 billion (USD163.3 million) for the rights to use the land in October 2020.

In recent years, Oppo has also been developing projects in other Chinese cities such as Shenzhen. Work of Oujia Tower, part of its Super Headquarters Base in Qianhai Bay, commenced in 2020 and the main structure was finished this September.

Oppo has invested CNY7 billion (USD965.3 million) in the base, which has a total area of about 243,800 square meters and is expected to be completed next year.

The company also started building its Smart Manufacturing Center in Binhai Bay, Dongguan in 2019, involving total investment of about CNY10 billion.
