(Yicai Global) Nov. 21 -- Oppo Electronics will build a design center in London, which is the only such lab besides its hometown in southern China, the handset maker announced on the launch of its new smartphone series yesterday.

Oppo aims to become one of the important participants in the European market of smartphones within the next three or five years, news outlet Tech Sina reported the Guangdong province-based firm as saying. The recently launched R15 will become the brand's leading series in the European market, it suggested.

The design lab will cooperate with European art institutes and renown designers. More than 90 percent of the employees in Europe will be local residents in the future. The firm will also work together with European operators and channel partners.

Oppo R17 series is the third flagship launch for the company in five months, and the models emphasize their prowess in taking sharp photos even at night. Prices for R17 Pro start from EUR599 (USD687) in Europe, and sales will begin on Nov. 16.  The company released Find X in the Louvre Museum in Paris this June. Oppo R17 Europe will be among the first regions to apply the 5th generation of mobile networks, the firm predicted, adding that it will spare no effort to be first to launch 5G phones.

Oppo has entered 35 countries and regions since its first step to a foreign market, namely Thailand in 2009. The company has teamed up with local operators in Italy, France, Spain and the Netherlands.
