(Yicai Global) Nov. 27 -- Norinco International Cooperation Ltd. [SHE:000065] has constructed the USD210 million Nam Leuk hydropower station in Laos through cooperation with local utility Electricite du Laos (EDL), the People's Daily reported yesterday.
The hydropower station, with an installed capacity of 86,000 kilowatts, was developed in through a BOT (build-operate-transfer) model.
Laos' national grid is divided into four blocks. The electric power generated by Nam Leuk hydropower station constitutes input for the power grid of sector one in Central Laos, covering areas of highest electricity consumption areas such as Vientiane and Xaisomboun. It makes up around 10 percent of the total electricity for the area, guaranteeing stable power supply in Laos' economic center.
The Laotian government has set a developmental goal to develop hydropower resources as part of its Storage battery of Southeast Asia plan. At present, Laos operates 47 hydropower stations in total, and power output has become a key export field and source of foreign exchange.
