(Yicai Global) Oct.30 -- As the demand for miniature digital cameras has fallen sharply, Japanese image and video equipment company Nikon Corp. [TYO:7731] will shut down its factories in China which produce small digital cameras. However, the decision will not affect Nikon's other operations in China.

The company will stop operations of its subsidiary Nikon Imaging (China) Co. established in Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province in June 2002, Nikon Corp. announced on its official website. Nikon China engages in the manufacture of digital cameras and its components. However, with the emergence of smartphones, the market for miniature digital cameras is fast shrinking, and the operating rate of Nikon China has dropped significantly, making it difficult to sustain the operations.

Nikon said it is not leaving China, the most important market in the world, and the sales subsidiary of its imaging division in Shanghai, Nikon Imaging (China) Sales Co., will not be affected by the closure of small digital camera production plant. Nikon will continue digital camera sales and after-sales services for consumers, it added.

Moreover, Nikon's other production and sales subsidiaries in China will also operate normally and will be more active in promoting services and business in the country, Nikon stressed.
