Nanning Rations Cheap Meat as Pork Prices Surge Nanning Rations Cheap Meat as Pork Prices Surge

(Yicai Global) Sept. 2 -- Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, is allowing shoppers to buy a limited amount of below-market-price pork as African swine fever leads to rising prices across the country.

Consumers will be able to buy up to one kilogram a day at no more than 10 percent below the average market price calculated over the 10 days prior, China News Service reported yesterday, citing new regulations brought into force on Aug. 31. The measures are the first of their kind in China.

Pork prices have been on the rise in farm-heavy Guangxi since African swine fever broke out in the region in February this year. Several slaughterhouses have shut down and some areas have even banned pork sales, limiting supply and pushing prices higher.

Prices rose particularly quickly from June 28 to July 29, according to the Nanning Price Monitoring Center, which said that in mid-July pork was 53 percent more expensive than a month earlier.

The hog disease has affected meat prices across the country, with meats from mammals rising 18.2 percent in July as pork surged some 27 percent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Pork prices rose by 18.2 percent, 14.4 percent, and 21.1 percent in April, May and June.
