(Yicai Global) Nov. 23 -- Chinese bike-sharing firm Beijing Mobike Technology Co. said that it has opened an office in Berlin, Germany. This marks the successful completion of the group's mission to enter 200 cities, China News Service reported.
In Berlin, the company will offer basic global positing system-enabled smart lock bikes that can access the Internet of Things and will use artificial intelligence to better meet users' needs. Germany is sometimes referred to as the birthplace of the bicycle as Baron Karl Drais invented the Laufmaschine or running machine (also known as the dandy horse) in that country in 1817. It was the first practical means of human transport to make use of the two-wheeler principle.
"Germans invented the first bicycle 200 years ago and today Mobike introduces innovative 21st-century bicycles to them," said Chris Martin, international business vice president of Mobike.
At the beginning of this year, Mobike set a target to cover 100 cities this year. By June, it had achieved this goal, and set a new one for 200 cities.
Mobike operates more than 7 million bikes in 200 cities. Riders use its service more than 30 million times a day. It has more than 200 million registered users. Mobike rolled out its first smart shared bicycles in Shanghai, China in April last year. The group has entered 11 other countries -- Singapore, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Australia, the US and Germany.
