(Yicai Global) Jan. 16 -- Microsoft will build its biggest lab dedicated to artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things in Shanghai's Pudong New Area.

The research and development center will be the US-based tech giant's first in the Asia-Pacific region and third worldwide. The local authority also said Shanghai Zhangjiang Group, a high-tech zone developer and operator, will partner with Microsoft on the lab, which will start operations in April.

Located at AIsland, a high-tech park in the Zhangjiang area of Pudong, the lab will cover an area of 2,800 square meters, reports said. It will be Microsoft's global research and development hub, specializing in AI and IOT solutions and innovative R&D and industrialization of applications, to assist firms in developing their own IOT products and solutions.

The lab will also facilitate further integration of AI and IOT and businesses' digital transition in manufacturing, retail, high-tech medical treatment, finance and public affairs, the reports added.

After completion, the center will provide qualified firms with innovative and upgraded services for developing end-to-end intelligent products in seven phases: innovative incubation, design and R&D, testing, prototype production, technical support, marketing cooperation and operational guidance.

The lab will also enable Microsoft to utilize local scientific research resources to bring its advantages in brand, service, technology and the industry chain into full play and further cooperate with Pudong New Area in the booming AI tech field.
