Li Ka Shing Foundation to Fund Shantou Uni Undergrad Courses for Next Four Years Li Ka Shing Foundation to Fund Shantou Uni Undergrad Courses for Next Four Years

(Yicai Global) June 17 -- The Li Ka Shing Foundation, named after Hong Kong's richest man, will cover all undergraduate fees at Shantou University over the next four years up to the tune of CNY100 million (USD14.4 million) each year.

The move will make STU China's first public comprehensive university to offer full-tuition scholarships for all undergraduate courses, local newspaper Nanfang Daily reported today. Students enrolling this year through 2022 will all study for free.

The foundation hopes the students taking advantage of the program will use the cash for additional learning, to expand their knowledge and skills and to develop a global vision that will help them cope with future challenges, a worker at the organization said.

Li Ka-shing's charitable organization piloted the scheme at Shantou Uni last year, offering the scholarship to 34 undergrad students at its newly established biomedical engineering department. Many students used the extra money to buy professional guidance books and paid courses, which really enhanced their development, said Fang Qiang, director of the faculty.

Set up in 1980, the foundation is STU's main source of funds and has contributed more than HKD10 billion (USD1.4 billion) to the institution, Li himself said in June last year, when he stepped down as honorary chairman of the university's board of directors.
