(Yicai) Dec. 21 -- Yang Yuanqing has donated USD28 million of his own funds to the University of Science and Technology of China where the chairman of Chinese personal computer giant Lenovo Group studied for a Masters degree, in the biggest donation ever received by the university from an alumnus.

The funds will be used to build an undergraduate classroom block, the Hefei-based university said on its WeChat account yesterday. The University of Science and Technology of China ranked fifth among Chinese universities in this year’s QS World University Rankings.

This is Yang’s third donation to the university. He gifted CNY10 million (USD1.4 million) to a university educational fund in both 2017 and 2020. Yang, who is also chief executive officer of the group, has also donated money to Shanghai Jiaotong University and Tsinghua University.

Last month, Lei Jun, founder, chairman and CEO of smartphone giant Xiaomi Group, gifted CNY1.3 billion (USD182 million) to Wuhan University, the biggest cash donation received by a Chinese university.
