(Yicai Global) Oct. 20 -- Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com Inc. [NASDAQ:JD] has officially released standards for gaming smartphones and unveiled the first such phone tailored to Chinese consumers. It plans to release the handset in the second quarter of next year.
This means JD.com will further its cooperation with smartphone makers and provide exclusive sales of the products in line with these new standards. It will also introduce eSsports phones to customers through JD Mall, JD Home and other online and offline channels.
During Singles' Day, China's largest online shopping sales day, JD.com will host two eSports events to provide customers with an immersive mobile gaming experience through its hardware and software services, C114 reported on Oct. 19.
Gaming phones are a subcategory of JD.com smartphones, said Hu Shengli, vice president. It aims to meet operational requirements of mainstream mobile games and is designed specifically to enhance user experience. The online retailer used Big Data analysis and user insights to outline the scope of the gaming phones and set hardware standards and performance requirements.
The number of mobile gamers in China reached 523 million last year, meaning more than a third of the population are playing games on their smartphones. However, gamers are challenged by a lack of mobile gaming standards, and often encounter problems such as games crashing, their phone overheating, reduced battery life and poor touchscreen sensitivity. Gamers need standards to help them select suitable handsets, according to iResearch.
Hu believes that gaming phones will be the next big thing in China's smartphone sector.
