(Yicai Global) Sept. 4 -- JD.com Inc. [NASDAQ:JD] will invest CNY30 billion (USD4.5 billion) in Fenggang town in the southern province of Guangdong to build an artificial intelligence center, JD Metropolitan AI Industry New City.

The online retail giant recently penned a strategic cooperation agreement in Beijing with Dongguan municipal government, which covers Fenggang town. The pair will collaborate in e-commerce, smart manufacturing, cloud computing and Big Data around Dongguan, building the city into JD.com's core base and profit center in the south, China News reported.

JD's largest project in Dongguan, the AI center is in Fenggang's Yantian village and covers 540,000 square meters with a total floor area of around 2.2 million square meters. The project will undergo three or four stages and be completed within six years. Once in operation, it should have an output of more than CNY40 billion a year, with annual tax payments costing CNY3 billion.

The center will include construction of a headquarters, main building and building facilities. Its four key areas will be a manufacturing base for smart logistics equipment, an engineering research and development center for unmanned systems, s smart logistics platform for unmanned systems and a fintech service platform. It hopes to hold around 3,000 companies and create around 40,000 jobs, Chinese media outlet Guandian reported.
