(Yicai Global) June 6 -- The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, has been appointed as the honorary professor of Beijing Sport University, BSU, ahead of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

In a ceremony held in the university to mark the occasion yesterday, Chi Jian, the BSU president, handed over the letter of appointment to Bach, Beijing Daily reported.

"BSU has cultivated many Olympic and world champions, and today, one more champion is born, that is me," Bach said jokingly in a speech at the BSU national team training base.

Bach, 64, is a former foil fencer and won men's team foil competition as part of the then Federal Republic of Germany team at Montreal Olympics in 1976. In September 2013, he was elected as the ninth president of the IOC and became the first Olympic champion to head the IOC.

Bach said that it was a great honor for him to be an honorary professor at BSU. The university has made great contributions to carrying forward the Olympic values and spreading the Olympic spirit, he added. BSU has not only cultivated many excellent athletes but also carried forward the sport ideals and invigorated the Olympic Games, Bach said.

As a new member of BSU, Bach hopes all faculty will forge ahead hand-in-hand and play a leading role in the development of world sports.

Beijing 2022

Bach also talked about the opportunities the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will bring about, and praised the efforts made by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. As the first city hosting both Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics, Beijing makes history, he said.

The IOC pays great attention to sustainable development, and plans to promote national health, ecology, environmental protection and sustainable economic growth in the host cities and regions on the occasion of Winter Olympics, he said.

During Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, BSU became a place for Chinese Olympians to achieve their dreams, Bach said, adding that he believes the university will also play a key role during the 2022 Winter Olympics and prepare Chinese athletes for the most important moments of their lives.
