International Atomic Energy Agency Completes First On-Site Assessment of China’s Nuclear Security Governance

(Yicai Global) Sept. 12 -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has praised China’s nuclear security efforts after finishing its first nuclear security assessment of the country at the request of the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA). The IAEA completed its 10-day on-site assessment late last week and issued a report, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

An IAEA expert team reviewed laws and other legal documents of China with regard to nuclear security, talked with representatives of relevant Chinese government departments and surveyed nuclear security management and technical measures in Fangjiashan nuclear power plant at Qinshang nuclear power base in Qinshang in East China’s Zhejiang province, Xinhua reported.

The IAEA appraisal is aimed at carrying out peer review on China’s nuclear security system and nuclear facility security capacity and putting forward suggestions on improvement and implementation of international standards in the field, Xinhua said.

Mohammed Khaliq, head of the IAEA's Nuclear Security of Materials and Facilities Section, said China's example in applying IAEA nuclear security guidance and using IAEA advisory services demonstrated its strong commitment to nuclear security at home and abroad, Xinhua reported.
