(Yicai) Sept. 11 -- Leading Chinese electronics brands, including Huawei Technologies, Xiaomi, and Lenovo Group, have stolen the spotlight at the Akihabara Electric Town in Tokyo, as their products are displayed in eye-catching spots.
Chinese electronics brands have been acquiring local businesses to learn more about the demand and channels in the Japanese market, using local research and development resources to upgrade their products.
This way, their operating revenue or market share in Japan increased despite the country’s home appliance market shrinking in the first half of the year.
For example, Haier Smart Home’s revenue in Japan rose 6 percent to CNY1.9 billion (USD262.3 million) in the six months ended June 30 from a year earlier. Retail sales of Hisense televisions in Japan achieved a 33 percent market share in the country in the first half, ranking first after Hisense-backed Toshiba at 24 percent, according to statistics from data analytic firm Gfk.
Big Camera is a large retail shopping mall in Akihabara. Smart watches of Huawei and Xiaomi, as well as notebooks from Lenovo Group and Huawei, are on sale in stores on the first floor.
Liquid crystal display, organic light emitting diode, and mini LED TVs of Chinese brands TCL and Hisense share the spotlight with Japanese brands Sony, Panasonic, and Sharp. Toshiba’s TV sets are also on display in this area.
Haier and its subsidiary Aqua, formerly owned by Japanese firm Sanyo Electric, and Hisense showcase their refrigerators next to those of Japanese brands Mitsubishi and Hitachi.
Ecovacs has several products on display in the robot vacuum cleaner section. The Chinese firm also put up a board with the image of a Japanese celebrity promoting the products. US brand iRobot also has some robot vacuum cleaners on sale in this area.
Japanese and Chinese brands, such as Aqua, Toshiba, and Twinbird, showcase their top-load washers in the washing machine section.
