(Yicai Global) March 15 -- Chinese customs authorities have returned a shipment of Peruvian alpaca toys due to excessive traces of chromium, a metal used in steel production.
The Injoy-branded toys were found to exceed the limit of the soluble heavy metal by 70 percent so over 1,860 products were sent back, Shanghai's customs bureau announced yesterday on World Consumer Rights Day.
Excessive chromium can cause skin allergies and if ingested, inflammation in the digestive system. After accumulating in the body for a long time, the metal will cause harm to the liver and kidneys.
Staff at the Shanghai Customs Commodity Inspection Center are inspecting the imported alpaca toys.
The toys are assessed to be unqualified.
Workers are taking samples.
The inspected toys are waiting to be sent back home.
