(Yicai Global) June 26 -- Hydrogen fuel cells and traction batteries will be the main driving forces behind the growth of the new-energy vehicle industry, serving complementary functions in supporting NEV technological development, said Wan Gang, China's science and technology minister.
At an international forum the China Association for Science and Technology held yesterday he stressed that China must speed up the development of its domestic hydrogen fuel cell businesses, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Hydrogen can be extracted from various sources, and is suitable for mass storage, continuous supply, long-distance transport and recharging operations, he said, noting that both hydrogen cells and electricity will be used as future automotive energy.
China must intensify its research into hydrogen fuel cell development policy to acquire more core technologies, he added. The government will improve industry and market coordination, and integrate various resources to more actively collaborate internationally. The country has set up a proprietary fuel cell auto power system technology platform for hydrogen fuel cell technological development with a production capacity of around 100 power systems and vehicles.
