(Yicai) Sept. 14 -- Huawei Technologies will release its flagship Mate 60 series and foldable smartphone Mate X5 on the second anniversary of the return to China of Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of the Chinese telecoms giant's founder Ren Zhengfei.
Huawei will launch its new mobile phone products, personal computers, and tablet chips on Sept. 25.
Meng, who is also Huawei's vice chairwoman, chief financial officer, and rotating chairperson, was detained at Vancouver International Airport in December 2018 on an indictment brought by the United States government accusing her of violating US sanctions against Iran and fraud. She flew back to Shenzhen, where Huawei is headquartered, after being released on Sept. 25, 2021.
On Aug. 29, Huawei announced the presales of the Mate 60 series, which includes the Mate 60, Mate 60 Pro, and Mate 60 Pro Plus, as well as the Mate X5. The new products attracted great attention, with customers rushing to preorder them online and offline. The cumulative shipment of Mate smartphones reached 100 million units, Huawei said.
Yicai earlier learned that some Huawei suppliers felt the recovery of the market and expect the company's shipments to continue to boost the market.
Huawei's overall smartphone shipments will likely jump 36 percent to 35 million units this year from the previous year, according to a semiconductor information platform TechInsights. Shipments of the Mate 60 Pro in China are expected to exceed one million units by the end of the year.
"From the long-term perspective, Huawei's supply being smooth is an important factor affecting the performance of the market," said Ivan Lam, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research. Sales of the Mate 60 Pro will exceed seven million units if supply can be ensured, he added.
Huawei will raise its mobile phone shipment target to 40 million units this year, according to media reports. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities, updated his prediction for Huawei's mobile phone shipments to reach 60 million units next year.
However, Huawei's smartphone shipments are still far behind the peak of over 200 million units in 2019.
Huawei took up 15.6 percent of the Chinese market of mobile phones priced above USD600 in the first half of the year, second only to Apple, according to International Data Corporation.
Apple released its newest iPhone 15 series yesterday, with official sales starting on Sept. 22.
