Huawei to Launch Its First 5G Smartphone Next Year, Rotating Chairman Says Huawei to Launch Its First 5G Smartphone Next Year, Rotating Chairman Says

(Yicai Global) Sept. 19 -- Huawei Technologies, the world's largest telecommunications equipment maker, will roll out its first 5G-capable smartphone around the middle of next year, according to its rotating chairman.

5G services will make streaming video and other media nearly 40 times smoother than 4G, Hu Houkun said yesterday at the 2018 World Economic Forum: Annual Meeting of the New Champions. He believes that the 5G sector will be worth CNY900 billion (USD131 billion) by 2026.

The event, also known as the Summer Davos Forum, opened yesterday in Tianjin, north China. Hu took part in the 5G conference to discuss preparation of China's 5G networks, which are set to go commercial next year; what regulatory obstacles may affect the technology's expansion; and the commercial value of consumers.

5G will certainly be safer than 4G, Hu said, adding that because of the mass amounts of data that will be transferred, 5G uses 256 bit encryption, compared with the 128 bit encryption used by 4G.

Huawei has already brought in data protection technology for its 5G phones, he continued, saying the firm has penned contracts with more than 50 business partners from around the globe since 5G standards were ratified in June this year.
