(Yicai Global) Sept. 14 -- September is the busiest time for smartphone manufacturers, as most leading brands release new products during the month.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, and Apple Inc.'s [NASDAQ:AAPL] event this week attracted greater attention than any of its predecessors. For other market players, even the iPhone X, hailed as the "most expensive smartphone in history," has failed to bring disruptive innovations to the industry the way past generations did.

Huawei Technologies Co.'s Mate 10 is better than the latest iPhone models in terms of both appearance and performance, a source at the Chinese electronic firm told Yicai Global after the iPhone event. "We no longer feel that much pressure after seeing the Apple release," he said.

Android devices beat the iPhone X to the punch on some 'new' features such as an edge-to-edge organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display and facial recognition capabilities, chip-making giant Qualcomm Inc. [NASDAQ:QCOM] said in an article it published a few hours ahead of the iPhone release.

"More importantly, iPhone 8's yield rate is only 50 percent at assembly lines, and the initial supplies will be limited, which means consumers will have to wait till late November or early December to buy the product at the price given on Apple's official website," said Sun Yanbiao, director of Mobile No. 1 Research Institute. "So, Apple's global market share will not change significantly over the short term."

From a technical point of view, many features of Apple's latest models are nothing new. Some Chinese smartphones already have Super Retina high-definition OLED screens without home buttons, vertical dual cameras, wireless charging and face scanning technologies.

Chinese smartphone behemoth Xiaomi Inc. unveiled its MIX 2 a day before the iPhone 8 event. The Xiaomi phone is almost totally bezel-free, and it has a 5.99-inch 18:9 display, the company said. It comes with a hidden speaker, a distance sensor and a selfie camera at the bottom.

"Apple will face increasing challenges, including competition from its Chinese rivals, in hardware innovation in the next decade, and competitive advantages are shifting away from the West toward the East," Sun opined.
