(Yicai Global) Sept. 20 -- Huawei Technologies Co., China's telecom equipment giant, submitted Huawei Pay patent application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The telecom equipment behemoth expects to roll out the service in the US by the end of this year.
Huawei launched Huawei Pay in 2015, which can be used on the company's flagship product 'Huawei Mate S' with fingerprint payment function, and can automatically jump to the fingerprint identification interface when approaching China UnionPay point of sale (POS) machine.
However, Huawei Pay has been in poor performance in China mobile payment market after its debut for more than a year, failing to win market shares from Alipay, online payment platform of Ant Financial Services Group, financial services arm of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. [NYSE:BABA], and WeChat Pay of Tencent Holdings Ltd. [HKG:0700], guancha.cn reported yesterday.
Huawei also applied for the trademark of Huawei Pay to the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to introduce it in Europe, www.huanqiu.com reported on Aug. 31. After obtaining the trademark application, Huawei will also need approval from major banks in Europe and be technically compliant.
Huawei Pay may enter the US as a subsidiary function of Mate 10, Huawei's next flagship phablet, guancha.cn said. However, Huawei Pay may also be rolled out ahead of time as an independent service.
