Huawei Is Prepared to Take Australian Government to Court Over 5G Ban Huawei Is Prepared to Take Australian Government to Court Over 5G Ban

(Yicai Global) Aug. 24 -- Huawei Technologies, the world's largest telecoms equipment maker, is willing to defend itself in court if it needs to, after the Australian government banned the company from participating in the construction of 5G networks on the island nation.

The sanction was based on political considerations, the Shenzhen-based firm said in a statement yesterday, adding that Australian businesses and consumers will now have to suffer slower network connections.

Huawei believes the Australian government's actions constitute a serious violation of free trade, fair competition and anti-discrimination policies. The company has never been criticized for its corporate governance, security or business operations in the country, and will liaise with authorities to discuss the matter or pursue legal recourse to protect its rights in Australia, if necessary.

Huawei's Australia unit announced on Twitter yesterday that the company and its local rival ZTE, China's second-biggest telecoms equipment maker, had been banned from providing 5G technology to Australia. The United States has already banned Huawei from bidding on government contracts and restricted ZTE's trading within the country, while the United Kingdom said last month that it had just "limited assurance" that Huawei equipment posed no risk to national security.

The Chinese government has never asked Huawei for support in intelligence operations, and the nation does not stipulate by law that domestic companies must cooperate with such endeavors, Huawei said, adding that foreign governments should not consider the firm a cause for concern based on misinterpretations of Chinese law.
