Huawei Has Invited Five Partners to Join New Smart Car Venture, Report Says Huawei Has Invited Five Partners to Join New Smart Car Venture, Report Says

(Yicai) Nov. 28 -- Huawei Technologies has reportedly invited five carmaking partners to join the new joint venture for intelligent auto systems and components that the Chinese telecoms giant plans to establish.

The five partners are BAIC BluePark, Changan Automobile, Chery Automobile, JAC Motors, and Seres Group, The Paper reported today, citing a source. Except for Changan Auto, which responded positively to the invitation, the others are still assessing and making related preparations.

Huawei and Changan Automobile announced on Nov. 26 that they will set up a JV dedicated to smart auto systems and component solutions, in which the Chongqing-based carmaker will own up to 40 percent of the equity.

Huawei has three approaches when partnering with carmakers: vertical parts supplier, intelligent systems provider through the Huawei Inside partnership model, and full-set solutions provider via the Huawei Smart Selection business model. Among them, the third approach has been the most successful so far, while the first two have yet to achieve significant commercial results.

Huawei’s collaborations with BAIC BluePark, Chery Auto, JAC Motors, and Seres fall in the third category, the one with the most intense cooperation, while that with Changan Auto falls in the second category.

Seres said on its WeChat account late on Nov. 26 that it had received an invitation from Huawei to join the new firm.

JAC Motors announced late yesterday that it was in talks with Huawei about joining the JV. However, the automaker later said it had not received any invitation from Huawei to join, invest, or participate in the new JV.
