(Yicai Global) March 10 -- Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), a non-profit dispute resolution organization, held the inaugural meeting of Women in Arbitration (WIA) at the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai to coincide with International Women's Day yesterday.

WIA is committed to committed to the promotion and success of female practitioners in international arbitration and related practice areas in China.  The event brought together a group of respected female arbitration practitioners, including the President of the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, senior Chinese and foreign lawyers, judges, etc., to share their experience and insights in the career development of women in arbitration.

The event provided a platform for women to consider and discuss current topics, grow networks and business relationships, and develop the next generation of leading female practitioners.

Dr Ling Yang, HKIAC Deputy Secretary-General and Chief Representative of HKIAC's Shanghai office, is behind the initiative having noticed: "the absence of groups dedicated to the interests of female practitioners in what is otherwise a thriving arbitration community in Mainland China".  Dr Yang told Yicai Global that HKIAC is pleased to actively taken on such social responsibility.

Take the legal profession as an example, Tang Hanjie, a senior lawyer from Herbert Smith Freehills told Yicai Global that qualifications, experience and expertise are of vital importance. Gender and geographical factors should not be taken into consideration.

HKIAC is a member of Lujiazui Council, with its Shanghai office based in Lujiazui Financial City, the district's finance and trade center.
