Hit-and-Run Didi Driver Hurts Four, Shines Regulators' High Beams on It Again Hit-and-Run Didi Driver Hurts Four, Shines Regulators' High Beams on It Again

(Yicai Global) June 14 -- China's ride-hailing brand owned by Didi Chuxing Technology is in hot water once more over criminal acts by one of its drivers.

Shanghai traffic enforcement officials today summoned China's leading online car-hailing operator Didi Chuxing for a meeting after a hit-and-run, requiring the operator to identify and dismiss vehicles without an online car-hailing qualification, The Paper reported.

This came after a Didi operator fled from a routine police traffic checkpoint and struck four bystanders in a hit-and-run incident yesterday.

Shanghai traffic enforcement personnel signaled to an unlicensed online ride-hailing car that had just picked up a fare to stop, but it accelerated through their checkpoint to evade an inspection, striking and injuring the four persons, one seriously, the city's transport commission reported today.

Beijing-based Didi responded to the report saying it organized and dispatched an emergency work team to the hospital at noon yesterday to assist in the victims' recovery by, e.g. advance payment of fees and arranging accommodations for family members, while also actively assisting police with their investigation of the culprit.

The commission has ordered Didi to examine its platform and completely purge from it all unlicensed vehicles before the end of this month, and to also conduct offline examinations of newly-registered operators and reviews of those that have been the subject of complaints.

The city's traffic authorities have also directed the car-hailing giant to further improve its basic information on all vehicles and their drivers before the end of the month and enhance the legal knowledge of all operators on its platform.

The online taxi firm is no stranger to notoriety, with many cases of rape, theft, violence and murder being attributed to its drivers over the past two years.
