Hebei Fulfills Its Iron, Steel and Coal Capacity Reduction Targets

(Yicai Global) Nov. 22 — Northern Chinese province Hebei has reduced its iron and steel production capacity in line with the government plans. The action plan was implemented to help clear air pollution and provide better environment. Hebei's air pollution often affects Beijing area's air quality.

Between January and October this year, Hebei cut 15.79 million tons of iron capacity and 14.62 million tons of steel capacity, already completing its task of iron and steel capacity reduction for 2016, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

The province also shut down 54 coal mines and reduced 14 million tons of coal capacity during that period, also accomplishing its mission of coal mine closures.

Under the government requirements, Hebei needs to cut 10.39 million tons of iron capacity and 8.2 million tons of steel capacity this year. The province itself raised its annual task to 17.26 million tons of iron capacity reduction and 14.22 million tons of steel capacity reduction. Hebei also targeted close 50 coal mines this year, with a total production capacity of 13.09 million tons.
