(Yicai Global) Feb. 22 -- HC SemiTek Corp., China's leading developer of light-emitting diode (LED) chips, will invest CNY10.8 billion (USD1.7 billion) to build an advanced semiconductor and device center to enhance its competitiveness and influence in the industry.

HC SemiTek signed a deal with Zhejiang Yiwu Industrial Park on Feb. 21 to build the facility in Yiwu Information Optoelectronic High-Tech Industrial Park, the company said today. Details on location and land transfer timing are subject to a contract signed by the company and Yiwu Municipal Bureau of Land and Resources, it said.

The Wuhan-based company expects to complete the project in seven years. Apart from various types of LED chips, its scope also includes Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) sensors, Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSEL), GaN-based lasers, and GaN-based power electronic devices.

HC SemiTek has already set up four production bases, with one each in Wuhan in Hubei province, Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu, Yiwu in Zhejiang and Yuxi in southwestern Yunnan, public information shows.
