(Yicai Global) Sept. 4 -- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has issued a world heritage certificate to the Gulangyu Islet, close to Xiamen city in China's southeastern Fujian province, Irina Bokov, the organization's secretary-general, said on Sept. 4.
The certification gives China 52 heritage sites, meaning it has more than any other country when discounting sites shared between nations.
Kekexili, an isolated region in China's western Qinghai-Tibet Plateau was previously the most recent place in the country to receive the world heritage status on July 7.
Xiamen's city government remains committed to constantly improving protection, management and utilization of the Gulangyu Islet in strict accordance with the assessment of UNESCO World Heritage Committee, said Xiamen's party secretary last month.
