(Yicai Global) Aug. 8 -- The public attention has focused on influenza infection in southeastern China's Guangdong province yet again, with a number of infections reported in Hong Kong of late. However, the province's health and family planning commission assured the public yesterday that influenza infection situation is stable in the province and there is no need to panic.

Guangdong reported 74,872 cases of influenza infection and three deaths this year as of Aug. 6, China News Service reported. The province is at the end of the flu epidemic season and will strengthen communication about flu infections with health agencies in Hong Kong and Macao and work together with them to contain the disease, the commission said.

Guangdong reported 96 cases of cluster-type flu infections this year as of Aug. 6, down 48 percent from the same period last year, the report said, citing provincial-level data concerning flu infections. Treatment of flu infections has declined in the past three weeks. Pathogen analysis shows that the virulence of the influenza virus in Guangdong has remained unchanged.

"This year's flu epidemic season is similar to those of previous years," the report quoted disease control experts in Guangdong as saying. "The March to July period is the height of the flu season. Guangdong is currently at the end of the flu season. The epidemic level has fallen since late last month and is expected to decline further this month. Influenza infection has remained stable in Guangdong this year to date," it said.
