Guangdong Plans to Build 3,000 Soccer Fields by 2020 Guangdong Plans to Build 3,000 Soccer Fields by 2020

(Yicai Global) Sept. 27 -- The Guangdong government plans to focus on investing and building soccer fields. The province will build 3,000 new fields by 2020, forming a network with wide coverage and strong universality.

The fitness work report that the provincial government issued yesterday includes plans for 2,000 campus soccer fields and 1,000 social ones. Their construction would bring the number of fields per ten thousand residents from 0.33 to 0.6, FSonline.com.cn reported.

Most soccer fields in Guangdong are in the economically-developed regions around the mouth of the Pearl River, and underdeveloped areas have fewer fields, the report said. Some 2,185 of the province's 3,563 fields, accounting for 61.3 percent of the total, are in nine cities near the Pearl River's mouth.

The 21 prefecture-level cities in Guangdong should all have a stadium with a standard soccer field and more than 15,000 seats by 2020. New residential areas and administrative villages should have at least one five-a-side football, and old residential areas should plan projects through community renovation schemes.

Some 65 percent of Guangdong's soccer fields are in schools, and many of them are not open to the public, said Lin Ying, deputy director of the provincial sports bureau.

The government will work to make sports stadiums available to the public for free or at a low cost.
