(Yicai) Aug. 8 -- The Summer Olympic Games in Paris have triggered an out-and-out sports frenzy in China, especially for tennis, after Chinese player Zheng Qinwen won the country’s first tennis Olympic gold in the women’s singles event.

Searches for sports on Meituan surged 180 percent since the beginning of July from a year earlier, while those for tennis rose 60 percent, according to the Chinese on-demand services giant. Group-buying tennis orders soared 172 percent in the period.

Tennis is more popular among Meituan’s customers in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Guangzhou. More than half of them are aged between 25 and 35 years old, according to the company’s data.

The page of tennis club Kome on Meituan’s crowd-sources review app Dianping received 17,500 views during the two-day weekend of Aug. 3, the day Zheng won the Olympic gold, up 133 percent from the previous weekend, the club’s founder You Haiping said.

The number of people taking trial classes at Kome doubled to 150 in the period, You added. Many of them said they found the confidence to play tennis after watching Zheng on television.

You expects children to start playing tennis after the summer holidays. “Many kids came to learn to play tennis in 2011 when Li Na won the French Open,” he said. “I believe the same thing will happen now that Zheng became an Olympic champion.”

In addition to tennis, also swimming, badminton, archery, and rock climbing have become popular sports among consumers, according to Meituan.

Badminton orders on Meituan have jumped 90 percent since the beginning of last month, while searches for archery ranges and rock climbing gyms have risen 40 percent and 62 percent, respectively. Group-buying orders for table tennis have climbed 50 percent.

Breakdancing, a new event at the Pairs Olympic Games, has also attracted some attention. Searches for breakdancing have more than doubled from a year ago, and those for guide notes on breakdancing have soared 150 percent.
