(Yicai) Jan. 8 -- The trend of increasing demand for big screens in the global television market is expected to continue, with the market size of Mini light-emitting diode TVs likely to soar over the next five years, the deputy general manager of Sigmaintell Consulting's large-sized display division said at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.
Mini LED TV shipments are expected to surge to 14.2 million by 2028 from 6.2 million in 2024, further widening the gap with organic LED TVs, which they surpassed last year, Zhang Hong, deputy general manager of the large-sized display division of Sigmaintell Consulting, told Yicai before the opening of the CES, held from yesterday through Jan. 10 in Las Vegas.
The relatively slower growth of the OLED TV market can mainly be attributed to the continuous improvement in picture quality of high-end Mini LED TVs and the limited size growth of OLED displays, which max out at 88 inches, Zhang pointed out.
In addition, the rise in refresh rates is another significant trend in TV hardware updates. The CES 2025 featured new TV models with refresh rates of 120, 144, and 165 hertz, with the market for high-refresh-rate TVs anticipated to have a compound annual growth rate of 10.6 percent over the next five years.
Global TV giants have different focuses at the CES, with Chinese companies emphasizing hardware improvements, while their Japanese and South Korean peers highlight the application of artificial intelligence in display technology, Yicai noticed.
Hisense Group and other Chinese TV makers hailed hardware breakthroughs at the event, Zhang Bing, research director of Omdia China, said to Yicai. In contrast, South Korean firms focused on AI applications, while Japan's Sony Group prioritized content intellectual property and services for content creators following a shift in strategy, Zhang added.
Hisense showed a Red, Green, and Blue three-dimensional color control liquid crystal display technology at the CES, featuring a 116-inch RGB-Mini LED TV slated to start mass production in March. China's TCL Technology Group announced the QM6K Mini LED TV series, highlighting a high refresh rate and gaming accelerators.
South Korean tech titan Samsung Electronics showcased various new TV services utilizing AI technology, including image and sound quality enhancement and real-time subtitles. The Suwon-si-based company also gave the latest progress of tie-ups with Microsoft and Google on AI tech.
