(Yicai Global) Jan. 6 -- Flights have been canceled and high-speed trains delayed after snow fell on Beijing for the first time this year.
High-speed lines from Beijing to Guangzhou, Shanghai and Zhangjiakou have slowed train speeds because of the snowfall, China Railway Beijing Group said. The Beijing-Tianjin intercity rail link and high-speed services between Tianjin and Qinhuangdao in Hebei province, Shijiangzhuang-Taiyuan Passenger Railway, and part of Shijiazhuang-Jinan High-speed Railway, have also been slowed, leading to delays.
Air China, one of the country's major airlines, said 105 flights had been canceled at Beijing Capital International Airport as of 7.00 a.m., with 149 flights allowed.
Snow began falling over China's capital last night and continued until early this morning.
Beijing closed nine sections of eight highways. A total of 131 highways, 135 sections of roads in Beijing, Tianjin, as well as Hebei, Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region were shut due to snow as of 7.45 a.m., the transport ministry said. All expressways in Hebei were closed and no timeline has been given as to when traffic can resume.
