First-Tier Chinese Cities Cement Leading Position in E-Commerce First-Tier Chinese Cities Cement Leading Position in E-Commerce

(Yicai Global) Dec. 29 -- The leading position of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the Chinese e-commerce remains unshaken, per a ranking of thousands of counties and districts Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s logistic unit Cainiao Network and online shopping platform Tmall published.

Shanghai's Pudong New Area was the package inflow leader on the list, followed by Shenzhen Baoan district, Beijing's Chaoyang district and Guangzhou's Baiyun district.

China's first-tier cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen each contributed two districts to the top ten, while three from Guangzhou made the cut. Foshan's Nanhai district was the only one from a second-tier city among them.

Nine of the ten districts and counties with the most spending power are in first-tier cities, which have developed modern service industries and e-commerce as well as the largest groups of high-income consumers. The central districts in the first-tier cities have large populations, as many districts in these cities have merged.

Nanhai had a population of 2,711,300 at the end of last year, making it one of the most populated districts in China. Before the district reform in 2002, Nanhai had consistently ranked among the top 100 districts and countries by economic output.
