Douyin Doesn’t Plan to Fill CEO Seat Vacated by Kelly Zhang Douyin Doesn’t Plan to Fill CEO Seat Vacated by Kelly Zhang

(Yicai) Feb. 7 -- Douyin Group, which runs the Chinese version of TikTok, has no plans to appoint a new chief executive officer following the resignation of Kelly Zhang, Yicai learned.

Zhang announced her resignation on WeChat today, saying she will now focus on parent company ByeDance’s video-editing app CapCut. “Business development needs and personal preferences” were behind her move, ByteDance CEO Liang Rubo said in an internal letter, according to media reports.

Just a week ago, Liang called on employees at ByteDance’s annual staff meeting to re-embrace the entrepreneurial spirit amid tougher competition and the boom in artificial intelligence, warning them not to become mediocre and unable to achieve new breakthroughs. ByteDance needs to have a sense of crisis, he repeatedly said.

Following Zhang’s move, Douyin President Han Shangyou will coordinate all of the Beijing-based company’s main businesses such as e-commerce, news, and advertising. Other businesses will be managed by department heads.

Zhang joined ByteDance in 2014 and led the team that launched Douyin in 2016. She was made CEO in 2020. The startup veteran will continue to report to Liang.

CapCut, developed by ByteDance unit Myotee Science and Technology, helps Douyin users make short videos, add captions, effects, and stickers to their videos. As of 2021, the app had more than 100 million monthly active users.
