(Yicai Global) May 25 -- Didi Chuxing, China's largest ride-hailing operator, is planning to share data with China's transport departments to create an intelligent transportation system, thereby taking its first step into the field of artificial intelligence.
The system, called "Chaoxi" (meaning morning and evening sea tides in Chinese), will allow the integrated arranging of all travel requests and dispatching of available transportation, said Didi Chuxing's Founder Cheng Wei at the Guiyang International Big Data Expo 2016 yesterday.
Beijing Xiaoju Technology Co., developer of Didi Chuxing, is currently accumulating big data on travel to be used in the smart transportation system. As a lot of information, such as data on traffic lights and congestion, is only available to the government's transport departments, Didi Chuxing is hoping to cooperate with the Guizhou provincial government on big data.
Didi Chuxing accounts for 87 percent of China's private ride-hailing market. Its total orders reached 1.43 billion last year, overtaking its main competitor Uber Technologies Inc.'s one billion rides as of Christmas last year, a number accumulated worldwide over the last five years.
Didi Chuxing's valuation reached USD25 billion following Apple Inc.'s [NASDAQ:AAPL] announcement on May 13 that it was investing USD1 billion in the company.
Mr. Wei commented on the Apple investment for the first time at the Guiyang Expo saying, "I hope in future Didi Chuxing can become like Apple, a world-class technology company."
