Didi Chuxing Sets Up Autonomous Driving Unit in Shanghai Didi Chuxing Sets Up Autonomous Driving Unit in Shanghai

(Yicai Global) March 4 -- China's leading online ride-hailing platform Didi Chuxing has formed a unit to develop technologies for self-driving vehicles.

Wholly owned Didi Woya Technology was set up on March 1 in Shanghai with a registered capital of CNY10 million (USD1.5 million), according to the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System. It will work on various technologies related to driverless vehicles, smart driving and the internet.

Didi Chuxing, operated by Beijing Xiaoju Technology, and Volkswagen China Investment established Juzhong Automotive Technologies in December. The joint venture may get involved in projects such as self-driving taxis, said VW China Executive Vice President Su Weiming.

Both Juzhong Automotive and Didi Woya are registered in Jiading district, a hub of Shanghai's car industry, which opened the city's first test road for intelligent network cars last March. Shanghai now has 37.2 kilometers of such roads in Jiading and Lingang Area, where Tesla's first overseas assembly plant is being built.

Didi Chuxing showed a video of smart driving tests at its annual meeting last February and secured a license from Beijing's city government in September to road test autonomous cars. It is the fourth internet company to receive this qualification after Baidu, Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings.
