CNNP Chair to Suggest Adding Nuclear Energy Into China’s Green Policy System CNNP Chair to Suggest Adding Nuclear Energy Into China’s Green Policy System

(Yicai) March 4 -- The chairman of China National Nuclear Power told Yicai he will propose at the Two Sessions that China should incorporate nuclear energy into its national green policy system, as well as ensure energy security.

Achieving the green application of nuclear energy is a golden opportunity, Lu Tiezhong, who is also a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Consultative Conference, told Yicai in an interview during this year’s Two Sessions.

The Two Sessions, which this year will run from today to March 11, are annual plenary meetings of the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislative body, and the National Committee of the CPPCC, the country’s top political advisory body.

CNNP is not only a power generator, as the company can also supply heating and gas, achieve desalination, produce isotopes, and even make hydrogen in the future, Lu said. It is possible, or even highly probable, that China will approve six to eight or even 10 nuclear power units approved in China this year, he added.

By the end of last year, China had 20 nuclear power bases and 91 units in operation or under construction, with an installed capacity of over 100.3 million kilowatts. Three to four new nuclear power units with an installed capacity of between 4 million kW and 5 million kW will likely be put into operation by the end of this year, bringing the number of nuclear power units in operation to 58, with an installed capacity of about 60.8 million kW.

CNNC has established partnerships with over 60 countries and regions worldwide, Lu noted. At the same time, the firm is promoting cooperation on nuclear energy projects with Pakistan, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, and other countries and regions along the Belt and Road Initiative.
