Chinese Truck Makers Breech Vehicle Capacity Rules, Leading to Road Accidents

(Yicai Global) Feb. 3 -- A number of Chinese truck makers design vehicles that can be overloaded in order to capture market share, a practice that can degrade the braking system, according to experienced vendors. Overloading and brake failures are among the main causes of road traffic accidents in China.

Serious offenders include Beiqi Foton Motor Co. [SHA:600166], China FAW Group Corp. and China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Co., according to figures from the Ministry of Public Security.

Trucking is the main way goods are moved around in China. The number of newly registered trucks reached an average 2.63 million a year over the past three years, the Securities Daily reported today. Unauthorized production and quality problems show up more often in new truck types, which cause more road traffic accidents.

There were 220 types of truck in breach of regulations at Beiqi Foton Motor, 174 at FAW Group, 109 at China National Heavy Duty Truck, 106 at Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co. [SHA: 600418], and 50 each at Nanjing Automobile Group and Shandong Tokng Automobile Manufacture Co.
