Chinese Stocks Rein in Their Retreat After Opening Plunge

(Yicai Global) Aug. 15 -- China's stock markets recovered some ground after starting off with a slump, with gold shares among the virtuoso performers.

The Shanghai Composite Index closed at 2,791.60 this morning, down 0.62 percent. The Shenzhen Component Index fell 0.73 percent to 8,901.15. The ChiNext Price Index, which tracks growth enterprises listed in Shenzhen, dropped 0.19 percent to 1,533.77.

Gold shares had risen by 1.2 percent at the lunch break.

The Shanghai Composite Index opened at 2,762.34, down 1.66 percent. The Shenzhen Component Index plummeted 2.08 percent to 8,779.53. The ChiNext Price Index tumbled 1.43 percent to 1,546.21.
