(Yicai Global) May 31 -- China's mainland stock markets finished the day down today, extending yesterday's downturn. 

The Shanghai Composite Index dropped 0.2 percent to 2,898.7. The Shenzhen Component Index declined 0.2 percent to 8,922.69. The ChiNext Price Index, which tracks growth enterprises in Shenzhen, fell 0.1 percent to 1,483.66.  

China's Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index pared 0.7 percentage point to 49.4 in May, showing that the major gauge of economic activity has fallen into contraction zone, according to data that the National Bureau of Statistics published today.
