(Yicai Global) Dec. 14 -- China's relaxed Covid-19 restrictions have prompted residents to flock online in search of electrolyte drinks.
Sales of Chinese soft drink brand Genki Forest and Japanese sports drink Pocari Sweat have surged, causing the products to be out of stock in some sales channels, The Paper reported today.
Beijing's municipal health commission has recommended people with mild Covid-19 symptoms to stay home and pay attention to the body's water and electrolyte balance as the country has been easing its Covid-19 testing and quarantine rules.
Genki Forest, which sells low-calorie drinks, will spare no efforts in guaranteeing supply, promising not to hike product prices, according to the report. Last week, sales of the firm's bottled electrolyte water jumped more than 1,300 percent from a week ago on e-commerce platforms. Moreover, takeout delivery sales rose by 1,000 percent. The Beijing-based company has doubled its production capacity and workforce to optimize and speed up manufacturing on the premise of guaranteeing product quality, it added.
Pocari Sweat has also started to be out of stock online. The firm's flagship store on JD.Com said it has not begun presales of new inventory. On Alibaba Group Holding's platform Taobao, sales have skyrocketed due to the changing Covid-19-preventing policies. Production has been accelerated and preorders will be delivered within 15 to 30 days.
In order to get enough electrolytes, people do not need to drink electrolyte beverages, Fan Zhihong, a board member of the Chinese Nutrition Society, said on social media. People can also prepare tea and coconut water drinks at home for electrolytes, Fan added.
