(Yicai Global) June 4 -- Chinese scientists have found world-class lithium resources in the central basin of China's southwestern Yunnan province.
The prospectors, from the Institute of Geochemistry under the Chinese Academy of Science, announced this discovery today, Science and Technology Daily reported.
The scientists have confirmed the presence of about 340,000 tons of lithium oxide deposited in a test area of 7.2 square kilometers, and estimate over 5 million tons of lithium oxide lie in the entire basin area.
The element, which is the Earth's 25th most common, finds extensive use in the aviation and battery fields and is even used as a treatment for bipolar disorder.
