(Yicai Global) Jan. 31 -- The producer of hit Chinese science fiction movie The Wandering Earth II has raised CNY113 million (USD16.7 million) from a crowdfunding project it set up to presell merchandise.

Saifan Science Fiction Space announced the early close of the crowdfunder on Jan. 29, citing a lack of production capacity for the three proposed products related to the film. It expects to deliver the first batch of goods in the second quarter of this year, it said.

The funding for the products was secured in eight days from Jan. 22, the first day of the Chinese New Year, breaking China’s crowdfunding record for film and television merchandise, according to data from e-commerce platform Taobao.

In China, a half to 65 percent of a movie's revenue comes from ticket sales, while merchandise accounts for less than 10 percent. In the United States, box office takings account for about 30 percent, with merchandise generating the rest. In Japan, product sales make up about 40 percent of a movie’s income.

The outlook for the movie-related merchandising in China is promising, as domestic intellectual property-based films are growing in number, according to a Citic Securities research report.
