(Yicai) Jan. 15 -- Maersk has inked long-term supply agreements with two of China's largest green fuels producers because Chinese companies have significant advantages in the field, according to the head of decarbonization at the Danish shipping giant's country arm.
Maersk aims to ensure a stable supply of green fuels and reduce carbon dioxide emissions through the new agreements, Karim Fahssis said at an "Innovation Drives Blue Ocean Economy, Infinite Possibilities of a Green Future to Explore" workshop held by Yicai during the Asian Financial Forum yesterday.
One of the Chinese companies that Maersk penned a deal with is the world's largest wind turbine manufacturer, and the other is the world's biggest solar panel maker, Fahssis noted. The Copenhagen-based firm will continue decarbonizing the shipping sector, he said, adding that everyone hopes to help solve the price gap between green and traditional fuels via carbon pricing.
"The carbon market needs active trading to better promote the energy conservation and emission reduction of key emitting parts," Lai Gaoyu, chairman of the Shenzhen Green Exchange, said at the workshop.
Shenzhen Green Exchange's self-developed Easygf.cn is a working platform that accurately connects low-carbon industry, energy, transportation, and other projects with financial institutions to promote the efficient development of carbon finance, Lai pointed out.
"To gain long-term benefits from the ocean, we need to take the innovation-driven and green development path of the blue ocean economy," Yang Yudong, editor-in-chief of Yicai, noted at the workshop.
Taking the shipping industry as an example, China has become one of the countries with the largest shipping facilities and the most goods moved by sea worldwide, with its fleet ranking among the top by size, Yang pointed out. This scale advantage provides a solid foundation for developing the marine economy and brings a broad market space and rich technical application scenarios for green shipping development, he added.
